Memecoin or Memetoken is a a cryptocurrency that is associated with some theme, often as a joke rather than a serious product. Dogecoin was the first memecoin because it was named after a popular dog on the Internet.
Brief history of the Memecoins
We can say that Dogecoin is OG of Memecoins. It was introduced on December 6, 2013 as a fork of modelled on Litecoin (itself a fork of BTC), and quickly developed its own online community. Created as joke, hence part of the Memecoins, Dogecoin has had violent ride and in July 2020, the price of Dogecoin spiked following a TikTok trend aiming to get the coin's price to $1. This year Elon Musk, briefly being a "CEO of Dogecoin" with his Tweets drove the price of Doge to all time high at $0.7376, very close to the TikTok influencers target of $1 per Dogecoin. The popularity of Dogecoin brought many forks, Doge being a fork itself, and we saw many new tokens follow similar path as Dogecoin. Initially big part of the Memecoins have been knock-offs of Doge, but now they start to evolve and target different communities.
Top Memecoins in November 2021
According to the SHIBA INU website, SHIB is the “DOGECOIN KILLER” and is listed on their own ShibaSwap, a decentralized exchange. Shibaswap has been treShiba Inu coin was created anonymously in August 2020 under the pseudonym “Ryoshi.” The meme coin quickly gained speed and value as a community of investors was drawn in by the cute charm of the coin paired with headlines and Tweets from personalities like Elon Musk and Vitalik Buterin.
Floki Inu is another Memecoin connected with Elon Musk. A cryptocurrency inspired by Elon Musk's dog that is currently going after an "aggressive marketing campaign" , "Missed Doge? Get Floki" is the tagline splashed on ads for the Floki Inu token placed at Underground stations, trains, and buses across London, with the campaign funded by a 4% marketing fee on buyers.
Doge + Elon Musk + Mission to Mars, what there is left to add to these Memcoin, it does look perfect. The project have their own token called "Elon" and it is not a meme coin, but a real project with the stated mission of becoming the first interplanetary currency that can be used for paying for the transport of settlers to Mars, at least they claim so. We think that this token is again Memecoin.
Samoyedcoin ($SAMO) is Solana’s memecoin, aiming to be community-owned and fun. It was inspired by Dogecoin, Sam Bankman-Fried (CEO of Alameda Research and FTX) and Anatoly Yakovenko (co-founder of Solana), hence the choice of the dog breed samoyed, bringing these two giants together.
